How many players in the whole history of golf could consistently hit the ball where they aimed?.Just two.Can you guess the names of both players?
The one most would immediately recognize is Ben Hogan. Students of the game will recognize the other golfer’s name as Moe Norman. Moe is a legend among three generations of tour players. He was a Canadian pro who rarely left his home country but was well known to all the top touring pros from Lee Trevino and Nick Price all the way to present day superstar, Tiger Woods.

Like many of you, I have only seen Ben Hogan on video and in the slo-mo footage I have acquired over the years. Moe, on the other hand, I saw in person several times both during tournament play and at clinics he gave later in his career.

I was actually a caddy in Moe’s group for two days (I was looping for another pro at the time).

What was their special gift? Why is it that they were so different?

But just think of how rare this skill is. Millions have played the game over the years, however, only two gentlemen could consistently hit the ball where they aimed.

Moe was certainly a challenge to understand because of his personality and he was awkward in most social situations. His frequent feuding with the RCGA, the ruling body of golf in Canada, did not enhance his image or endear him to the public.Many dismissed Moe’s rambling as gibberish when he tried to explain the foundational elements of his swing. Because Moe spoke in riddle and repeated himself habitually, few bothered to try to examine what he was trying to say. He was often ignored or dismissed as an aberration incapable of sensibly explaining how he executed his considerable ball striking skills.It was not unlike trying to learn from a Zen master when you tried to piece together the elements that made Moe’s swing tick.

In the past decade or so, a whole new group of teachers and players have discovered Moe and have set about to piece and parse together exactly what the man meant. Competing proponents of the real Moe Norman swing have come upon the scene, each proclaiming that they have solved the mystery behind one of the most unique swings in all of golf . Some of these methods can be more surely described as good marketing hype than sound and useful theory.

Make no mistake, Moe’s move was both powerful and explosive through the ball. Few of the methods which purport to piggyback on Moe’s move replicate the man’s powerful action through the ball . My colleagues and I have tried these new methods and to a man (and a lady) all have encountered a disturbing loss of distance with every club in the bag.

In my youth, I caddied on one of the minor pro tours. As I indicated previously,Moe was one of three pros in our group for the first two days of the tournament. Beyond being a reclusive individual, Moe exhibited the patience of a toddler when it came to the ponderous pace of tournament golf. Often during these long waits Moe would mutter on and repeatedly bounce a ball off his driver or wedge. He would often drop 5 or 6 balls into a bunker on a just played hole and spank them out to keep himself amused. Clearly he needed to find compensatory activities to dissipate the wealth of energy he exhibited.

Through the years the stories of Moe’s behaviour and decorum have multiplied to the point that it is now difficult to sift fact from fiction. The fables are certainly more suspect when they come from former caddies! The anecdotes and recollections might be fictional at best but what is factual is the man was a ball striking machine. Never have I witnessed a player long past his prime who seemed to have lost so very little of his exquisite talent.

Unless you saw Moe hit balls live, you really cannot appreciate how phenomenal he was . In the days when exhibitions were up close and personal, I had the chance to shag balls for Moe.An exhibition that drew sadly only a handful of spectators. So accurate was the man that he literally was bouncing the balls at the feet of my colleague and myself.Moe would reposition us when he changed clubs and the balls would again fall like arrows. It was always hypnotizing to just sit there and marvel in the artistry of the man.

The diversity in personality between Ben Hogan and Moe Norman could not be greater. There is such awide gulf between the savant on the one side and the sage on the other. Though Moe struggled to explain the elements of his great ball striking, Ben Hogan, by contrast, made no concerted attempt to share his secrets with the rest of the golfing fraternity.His method is shrouded in mystery and has spawned a whole host of research articles bent on uncovering the Hogan secret move. The mystery of the Hogan swing has been an elusive quest which has consumed hundreds of golfers for over a half century.

Despite the work of the golfing community to reverse engineer the Hogan swing, the mystery prevails. No one presumes to be teaching the comprehensive Hogan action. Hogan was not filled with bon homie and a gentle nature. Hogan was an island surrounded by inhospitable waters.Hogan preserved a studied distance between himself and his world.Hogan did not bridge the gap between himself and the fans of the game?

Yes there is a perfect swing . However,you can’t do it; although you can come perilously close to mastering it!

Can you explain what you mean? It is essential that we become aware of what the human body can and cannot do. As well, you must grasp the physics that come to bear on this swinging motion. Sounds complex!
